LA Galaxy @ Chivas USA (8/12)

LA Galaxy @ Chivas USA

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Home Depot Center

Kick-off: 8:00 p.m

The Galaxy and Chivas USA will meet for the third and final time this season on Sunday in a game that has more importance than any other between the two has had in quite some time. In their respective home games, the goats and the Galaxy each obtained a victory against the other, meaning this game will decide who takes the season series. More importantly, though, the Galaxy need the victory to distance themselves from the red and white, who are currently seven points behind with four games in hand.

This past Sunday LA visited CenturyLink field and had the opportunity to take third place in the Western Conference if they defeated the Sounders. The loss to Seattle snapped the Galaxy’s five game unbeaten run, giving LA their first defeat in a month. If the Vancouver Whitecaps fail to get a win over Real Salt Lake, the Galaxy can move up to fourth place in the conference standings by defeating the goats.

Since their meeting a few weeks ago, few things have changed for both the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA. The two teams still remain in the same position they were in on July 21st, when the Galaxy (in fifth place) defeated the goats (in sixth) 3-1. After that game, Chivas only played against Portland, while the Galaxy has played against Dallas and Seattle, as well as friendlies against Tottenham and Real Madrid.

In a surprising move to many, Chivas acquired midfielder Shalrie Joseph from the New England Revolution. Joseph could possibly make his debut against the Galaxy, while midfielder Oswaldo Minda may also return to action against LA this Sunday. LA will be without David Beckham, who will be taking part in the London Olympics’ closing ceremonies.
