Swedish International Christian Wilhelmsson signed for the LA Galaxy on September 5. He has 78 caps for the Swedish national team and scored nine goals. Wilhelmsson played for Belgian UEFA Champions League contender Anderlecht before moving on to Ligue 1’s FC Nantes. While at Nantes, he had loan spells at AS Roma, Bolton Wanderers, and Deportiva de la Coruna. After his various European loan spells, he joined Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal, scoring 24 goals in 69 games. Now he can add the LA Galaxy to his impressive resume.
Wilhelmsson adds depth to the Galaxy as a winger during an important time in the MLS season, as fatigue is an issue for the team as they compete in the regular season and the CONCACAF Champions League. He can play on either the right or left wings. Should he earn a starting spot on the left, the reliability of left back Todd Dunivant will allow Wilhelmsson to move further forward and more regularly join and create chances on the attack.
The Galaxy continues to build their squad with quality internationals. Wilhelmsson made his 60 minute debut for the LA Galaxy Reserves in a 2-0 loss against the San Jose Earthquakes on September 4. Look to see Wilhelmsson debut soon for the first team. As always, tickets for all home games are available through www.angelcitybrigade.net.
