LA Galaxy vs Portland Timbers
Wednesday, June 19, 2013
Kick-off: 7:30 p.m
For the first time in over three weeks the LA Galaxy will once again play at home and will be looking to return to winning ways when they host the Portland Timbers at the StubHub Center. Since the 4-0 win at home on May 26th the Galaxy have lost three in a row and have been outscored 10-1, bouncing out from the US Open Cup in the process.
The Galaxy has suffered in the final third for most of the season. With Robbie Keane unavailable with injuries or on international duty the problems in the attack have become more apparent. Another factor that has impacted the Galaxy’s recent results is the absence of Omar Gonzalez, who is slowly claiming a starting position with the United States Men’s National Team in World Cup Qualifiers.
Since Portland joined the league in 2011, the Galaxy has always seen favorable results against them. In five meetings the Timbers have one victory, the other four games going the Galaxy’s way. Contrary to the previous couple of seasons, the Timbers are on a good run and one of the top teams in the Western Conference. Having been one of the worst teams on the road in the previous two seasons, Portland is now the only team unbeaten away from home in MLS. The Timbers are unbeaten in their last fifteen games in all competitions, suffering only one defeat in the 2013 campaign so far. With Darlington Nagbe, Will Johnson, and Ryan Johnson leading the attack the Timbers have been shut out only once this season.
On Monday morning it was announced that the Galaxy had acquired Pablo Mastroeni from the Colorado Rapids. The deal gave the Galaxy the veteran midfielder and the rights to midfielder Baggio Husidic, who currently plays for Hammarby IF under former Galaxy player and coach Greg Berhalter. In return, the Rapids received one of the Galaxy’s international spots through the end of 2014 and their second round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. Pablo Mastroeni is eligible to play Wednesday night, and might see some minutes as starting midfielder Marcelo Sarvas is suspended due to yellow card accumulation.
