SJ Earthquakes vs LA Galaxy (6/29)

LA Galaxy @ SJ Earthquakes

Saturday, June 29, 2013

Stanford Stadium

Kick-off: 7:30 p.m

This weekend the LA Galaxy travel to northern California to face the San Jose Earthquakes in the first meeting between the two clubs this season.  Fresh off a victory against Chivas USA, the LA Galaxy will look to build a winning streak against the Earthquakes, who have been struggling all season long. The last time these two teams met the Galaxy eliminated San Jose in the 2012 Western Conference Semifinals, overcoming a 0-1 deficit to win the series 3-2 on aggregate.

The Galaxy finally earned three points this past weekend against Chivas USA after going three games without a victory. With a goal from Gyasi Zardes, LA defeated the goats to move up a spot in the Western Conference. With the preferred starting eleven together on the field for the first time in a while, the Galaxy showed some improvements from the midweek game against Portland.

Last year the Earthquakes got the best of the Galaxy in the regular season. In three meetings San Jose took two victories and a draw. The Galaxy’s lone victory against the Earthquakes was perhaps when it mattered most, in the return leg of the Western Conference Semifinal, giving SJ their first defeat at Buck Shaw of the season and eliminating them in the process.

The Earthquakes are the opposite of what they were last year. Currently ahead of only Chivas USA in the Western Conference standings, the defending winners of the Supporters’ Shield have had just four victories this season. Things have been bad for SJ, who have fired Frank Yallop and gave DC United their first victory after a 13-game winless streak. After winning the golden boot last season, San Jose’s DP Chris Wondolowski has scored just five goals this season, more than any other player in the SJ roster.
