Saturday, May 19, 2012

Home Depot Center

Kick-off: 7:30 p.m

The “SuperClasico” returns this Saturday when Galaxy visits Chivas USA at the Home Depot Center. Both teams were held to a draw on the road this past weekend. The Galaxy earned a point off Beckham’s free kick against Montreal while the goats gave up a goal a couple of minutes away from the final whistle against San Jose. The Galaxy are now winless in their last four games played, but were able to snap a two-game losing streak with Saturday’s result. Chivas are also winless in their last four, but were able to break their three-game losing streak against the Earthquakes.

The Galaxy’s lack of finishing was again the story this past weekend. Beckham’s goal was LA’s first in over 240 minutes, coming off a set piece. The Galaxy forwards are not only not producing goals, but they aren’t creating opportunities in front of goal. In the first half of the game against Montreal the Galaxy had no shots on goal. The team came out with a different attitude after halftime, as LA’s six shots on goal in the second half put Montreal under some pressure. Former Galaxy ‘keeper Donovan Ricketts made it impossible for the Galaxy to get the three points on the road. Robbie Keane, who played the full ninety minutes, has now been scoreless for the last seven games. Ten games into the season, the Galaxy defense has been unable to maintain a shutout.

This edition of the SuperClasico sees both teams coming into this game as even in the standings as they have been in quite some time. The Galaxy are currently in seventh place, one point above the red and white. Chivas have not won at home, losing all their five games at the HDC by a one goal difference. The game against the goats will be the first of three for the Galaxy in a week. The goats have not had a victory against the Galaxy since September 13, 2007.

The Galaxy continues to struggle. This past weekend LA fell at home to New York, and despite dominating possession for most of the game the Galaxy was unable to find the back of the net. The Galaxy are now winless in their last three games, with the most recent two resulting in defeats. Under Bruce Arena, LA has never lost three games in a row.

The Galaxy offense has been struggling all season long. In the past 180 minutes LA has only scored once, totaling eleven goals in nine games. Robbie Keane, the Galaxy’s leading scorer with three goals so far, has not scored since the game against New England on March 31st, going scoreless for six consecutive games. Edson Buddle has an even longer streak, having not scored a goal since the season opener on March 10th. After the game against New York Arena stated “We haven’t found a player that can consistently get us goals. There have been plays there where the ball has to end up in the back of the net and it isn’t and it’s costing us dearly.” And he’s right, while the Galaxy has been unable to keep a clean sheet through every game the team has played, opportunities to score have been created, but the killer instinct in the final third isn’t there.

Montreal, undefeated at home so far this season, host the LA Galaxy this Saturday. The Impact are unbeaten in their last three games and have a two-game winning streak. To the surprise of many, Montreal defeated Sporting KC this past weekend, handing them their first loss at home. Montreal will face the Galaxy days after having traveled to Toronto for their second leg meeting in the Amway Canadian Championship semifinals.

In 2011 the Galaxy suffered only 5 defeats throughout the entire season (including playoffs). It’s barely May, and the Galaxy are one loss away from matching last season’s total. The Galaxy’s loss against Seattle on Wednesday night snapped LA’s three-game unbeaten run. For the first time since joining the league in 2009, the Sounders were able to defeat LA at home. Once again, just like in all the eight games the Galaxy has played this season, the team was unable to get a shutout.

David Beckham, Robbie Keane, and Todd Dunivant should all be rested and ready to go on Saturday, since they didn’t travel to Seattle. Having three games in a week, Bruce Arena wanted to limit players’ minutes. Arena, who opted to rest key players on Wednesday’s game against a Western Conference opponent said after the defeat: “I think it’s a difficult week with the travel and playing on this surface. We wanted to keep some players fresh for the game on Saturday. That’s the decision I made. We didn’t think we were going to be able to play eleven players in three games and we had to rotate some players. It made sense to me to have those players available on Saturday.” The game saw Bryan Jordan, Bryan Gaul, and Adam Cristman make their first starts, as well as Sean Franklin play his first game in the midfield this season.

The Galaxy have shifted all focus onto New York for Saturday’s game. The rivalry between both sides has been picking up over the past few meetings. The rivalry has had just about everything, from Landon Donovan’s “Who is Luke Rodgers?” to LA defeating NY in conference semifinals last year. From Rafa Marquez starting a scuffle that led to suspensions, to Beckham/Magee connecting in New York and LA to send the Galaxy through to Conference Finals. Speaking of Marquez, he won’t be available for New York on Saturday due to a suspension (surprised?). With one of the league’s best offenses, New York may struggle against LA as Henry (who has nine goals and five assists so far) will also miss the game due to injury, while others such as Tainio, Agudelo, Keel, Miller, Conde, and Solli are still questionable for this game.

A goal in stoppage time from Pat Noonan allowed the LA Galaxy to salvage a point this past Saturday night against FC Dallas. LA had the opportunity to go up 1-0 when Landon Donovan was taken down inside the box in the second half, but Robbie Keane was unable to put the penalty kick away. A few minutes later Dallas had a penalty kick of their own and Brek Sheak was able to capitalize, putting the Hoops up 1-0. When it seemed like FC Dallas was walking out of the Home Depot Center with 3 points Noonan managed to score in the 92’ and tied the game at 1.

In a busy week, the Galaxy will travel to Seattle’s CenturyLink Field to play the Sounders on Wednesday night. LA, unbeaten in their last 3 matches, will look for their second consecutive win on the road, while Seattle will look for their first win at home against the Galaxy since joining MLS. The Galaxy are unbeaten in the last six MLS meetings (including playoffs) between both clubs, winning five of those. Since their 2-0 win over LA on August 15, 2009 the Sounders have 1 point out of 12 possible against the Galaxy. The Sounders have won three out of their four games played at home, while the Galaxy has won once and lost once on the road.

It seems like the sleeping giant has been awakened. The LA Galaxy recorded their first consecutive wins of the season this past Saturday defeating the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, winning a game away from home for the first time in the process. Captain Landon Donovan scored for the second game in a row, again with an assist from Robbie Keane. Late in the game David Junior Lopes committed a foul inside the box- at least, according to referee Ramon Hernandez- and Omar Cummings had a chance to tie the game at 2. Josh Saunders ensured the Galaxy would return to LA with three points by saving the penalty kick attempt in stoppage time.

The Galaxy will try to keep their winning streak alive when they play host to FC Dallas at the Home Depot Center this Saturday. The defending MLS Cup Champions will look to win back-to-back games at home for the first time this season. After six games LA has nine points, while Dallas has eleven points after playing eight games. The hoops currently stand two spots above the Galaxy in the Western Conference. LA is yet to record a shutout this season, although the team has not given up more than one goal in each of the last three games. FC Dallas, yet to gain a single point on the road, will visit the HDC after falling to Vancouver on Saturday and hosting Real Salt Lake on Wednesday.

This past Saturday the LA Galaxy snapped a two-game losing streak after defeating the Portland Timbers 3-1. Landon Donovan, Juninho, and David Beckham scored in the come from behind victory, all three getting their first goals of the season. Not only did we see great goals from Juninho and Beckham, but we also witnessed the debut of David Junior Lopes in a Galaxy uniform. The newly-acquired defender replaced AJ DeLaGarza, who missed the game due to injury (R adductor strain). Lopes impressed his teammates in his first game. Beckham considered Lopes to be man of the match, and when Donovan was asked about the Brazilian he said “We’re glad to have him. Hopefully as they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. For us, he was fantastic.”

There were more positive vibes around the Galaxy locker room following the game on Saturday. When asked about his thoughts on the team’s performance, head coach Bruce Arena said “I think inside the team they have probably what they did individually, as a group as a team it was better. I think at the end of the day you have to be a good team and we haven’t been a good team in the early goings. Tonight we were a good team.” He’s right, the Galaxy played a much better game than they had a couple of weeks ago against Sporting KC, where they were unable to get a single shot on goal. Todd Dunivant added “The mood of the team felt a lot different than it has. We can build on that. [If] we come to play like that, we’re not going to lose many games.”

LA hits the road for the second time this season to visit the Colorado Rapids. The Rapids, undefeated at home, will be looking to take advantage of the altitude and snap their two-game losing streak. The Galaxy, on the other hand, will try to get its first back-to-back wins of the current MLS campaign as well as the first victory away from home. Through 5 games so far, the Galaxy has been unable to maintain a clean sheet. Connor Casey- who tore his Achilles last July- is on day-to-day recovery, even though he had targeted his return for this Saturday’s game.

“Well obviously I’m pretty sure they’re not popping champagne in there” said Bruce Arena of the locker room morale after another defeat this past Saturday. This time, the Galaxy was defeated by Sporting KC, falling to a 1-3-0 record. Though the team is a game behind most of the Western Conference, the LA Galaxy is currently in last place with only three points after four games. It’s been a tough start for the 2011 MLS Cup Champions, who are currently in the second worst start to a season in the team’s history. For the first time this season, LA was unable to score. Not only that, but the Galaxy left Kansas City without a single shot on goal. Going into that game, the LA was averaging 5.33 shots on goal per game. Since Bruce Arena took over the Galaxy in 2008, the team has never lost three games in a row.

On Saturday the Galaxy hosts the Portland Timbers at the Home Depot Center. Neither club has been performing as well as they were expected to before the season got underway. Portland was also defeated this past Saturday, losing at home to Chivas USA. After five games, the Timbers have four points, recording a draw, a win, and three defeats. The Timbers, winless in their last four, head to Southern California to try to get their first three points on the road, while the LA Galaxy look to snatch their own two-game losing streak. Since becoming part of MLS last season, Portland has been one of the worst teams away from home, getting two victories in nineteen games. Last April they fell 3-0 to LA at the HDC. Undefeated at home all throughout last year, the Galaxy has fallen twice so far this season.

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

No one expected the Galaxy to be struggling this early in the season. Can it be called a struggle after only 3 league games or are fans overreacting? There are those who can create an argument for either side. Many expected LA to represent MLS in what was left of the CONCACAF Champions League, but the Galaxy was eliminated by Toronto FC in Quarterfinals. Some are even considering the Galaxy’s season to be a failure due to LA’s performance in the regional tournament, which was said to be the team’s primary objective. In that series, LA had to fight hard in final minutes of first leg to get a 2-2 draw. A draw in Toronto seemed like a good result, because all the Galaxy needed was a draw in the second leg to advance. The Galaxy failed to do so, as the team fell at home for the second time in a few days. Days before, the Galaxy lost the home/season opener to Real Salt Lake, marking LA’s first defeat at home since November 2010.

Probably the part that worries LA Galaxy fans the most is the defensive troubles the team has been having. During preseason, the team gave up 17 goals in 9 games. The absence of Omar Gonzalez might be a factor for the Galaxy’s lack of positive results, but 4 out of the 5 members of last season’s backline are still playing. So far, seven goals have been given up in three league games. LA has lost 3 out of 4 games at home in all competitions so far, winning only 1 out of 5 games.

There has been a lot of talk surrounding the Galaxy after the disappointing loss to the Revolution. Rumors of a confrontation between Beckham/Sarvas at halftime began to make their way around the internet. Neither one of them came out for the second half. Different versions about what happened have been told, so in the end everything’s a rumor. When asked why Beckham didn’t come out for the second half, Arena stated subs were purely “tactical” and a “coach’s decision”. Then, rumors of Beckham not attending this Saturday’s game surfaced online on Monday. Several articles had him attending Sir Tom Finney’s birthday celebrations, but it looks like the information was false (at least, the rumors/speculation seemed to slow down after Alexi Lalas tweeted the Galaxy told him “Beckham will not be in England this weekend. However he recorded a video salute to Sir Tom Finney”).

The Galaxy’s most difficult test so far in this young season will be on Saturday, when the team plays on the road for the first time this year in league play. The opponent? Eastern Conference-leading Sporting KC, one of two teams still undefeated. LA lost to New England 1-3 this past weekend. Robbie Keane scored his third goal in two games, with Buddle assisting in LA’s lone goal against the Revolution. The Galaxy backline will be tested throughout the game, as Sapong, Kamara, and the rest of SKC are aware of LA’s defensive troubles as of late. If the Galaxy wants to turn things around, this is the game in which the team needs to show up and put on a good performance.

Kick-off: 8:00 p.m

The LA Galaxy return to action at the Home Depot Center this Saturday when they host the New England Revolution. LA is coming off a 3-1 victory against DC United, which saw the Galaxy complete a near-perfect game that was only blemished by the goal given up late in the match. The Galaxy created many scoring opportunities throughout the game, but unlike the games against Real Salt Lake and Toronto, they were able to convert their chances. From early on the Galaxy attack seemed dangerous, but it wasn’t until late in the first half when they were able to break the deadlock and go up 1-0. Robbie Keane scored a brace (his first in MLS) and Marcelo Sarvas scored his first MLS goal since arriving to the club during the offseason. More importantly, the defense showed some improvement compared to the previous three games, going 87 minutes without conceding a goal. Maintaining a clean sheet will definitely be a priority this weekend.

In their home opener this past weekend, New England defeated the Portland Timbers 1-0. An early goal thirty seconds in was enough for the Revolution to capture its first three points of the season. The Galaxy had the week off, finally getting some rest after playing four games in twelve days. Bruce Arena finally had a good amount of time to train with pretty much a full squad, since offseason loans did not allow that leading up to the first couple of games of the season. Coming into this game the LA Galaxy is currently eighth place in the Western Conference, having only played two games, while the Revolution is 6th in the Eastern. These two clubs met twice during preseason in the Desert Diamond Cup Tournament. New England won the first encounter while the Galaxy (playing mostly with substitutes) won the tournament final in penalty kicks.
